My conjecture for the underlying root cause is that there are more childless single women in the left wing samples. This is a population that has more borderline personality disorders and bipolar disorders. Especially as they age and remain single and gradually realize that they can no longer easily have children.
Mental disorders hits women especially hard post menopause, especially when they're still single and childless.
Conservative people like me are more prone to clean everything on the house, we have best personal hygiene, we didn't like to have casual sexual encounters (mostly because hygienic reasons). So, this is not a "mentality" issue, we are talking about hygiene. Most of the mental problems are associated with bacteria, fungus, and parasites. The problem with the left is mostly bad hygiene, not use of adequate chemicals for cleaning on house (or not cleaning the house at all), bad ventilation on the house, more animals into the house, more casual sexual intercourse, more similar friends that didn't have good hygiene.
Would be interesting to know the relationship between depression and the decreasing levels of religious faith (specifically Christianity) in the US & Europe. Sadly, this factor would get ignored for no good reason by any mainstream think tank / academic.

I haven't read through every study summary carefully, but this seems like it could very well be a self reporting measurement issue.
Conservatives are more masculine, stiff upper lip, the silent but strong types. Liberals more famine, therapeutic and honor victims.
These tendencies would likely differentially affect self reporting of depression. Do any studies attempt to account for this?
